Throughout the 80s and 90s the International Swimming Hall of Fame featured high quality displays of swimming tokens like Mark Spitz’s starting block and Johnny Wiessmuller’s Olympic medals. By the 2000s, however, the displays were left neglected and outdated, due to the Hall’s lack of finances. In 2004, the Hall was robbed, and some of the most valuable items on display were stolen.
In 2005, Bruce Wigo became the new Chief Executive Officer for the Hall. Dennis Carey, an old friend of his, helped Wigo persuade every one of the 21 members of the board to resign, as well as to give them the authority to appoint a new board. Following this, Carey put his efforts into convincing Mark Spitz to head the new board. Carey is also a member of the new board at the International Hall of Fame.

Two-thirds of thousands of mergers fail on a yearly basis. In the book The Human Side of M&A, Dennis Carey and Dayton Ogden present tactics and precautions which can be useful in this industry. They explain that almost every failed merger had been working in a logical manner both financially and strategically before their downfall, and that the human element was the lacking component which resulted in the failure.
The authors share their unique experiences to reveal the correct way to address the more human side of a merger, as well as expose the best practices to pursue and the potential drawbacks. They talk of the correct way to evaluate the quality of the people on both sides of the merger in order to decide who should stay. Carey and Ogden claim that CEOs must learn to establish a new vision for the combined company, and not hold on to their personal visions of individual companies. The end of the book is a statistical appendix which uses an analysis of successful mergers to validate the authors’ opinions.

This year’s World Retail Congress, with sponsors such as Korn\Ferry International with senior client partner Dennis Carey, took place on October 25th in Berlin, which is one of Europe’s most vibrant and significant capital cities. This meeting provides the important context, fresh ideas and challenging thinking to prepare senior retailers for the “new retailing” that will follow the global recession. The retailers also had programs focused on leadership and thought processes to provide the retailers with additional insight.
This year’s program included the new “executive roundtables”. These are smaller workshop formats which enabled retailers to have a hands-on experience with the new online, digital and social networking channels which are expected to be adopted by consumers in the near future. Delegates were also able to participate in the Retail Study Tours, as well as receptions and gala dinner networking events that took place throughout the city.

Dennis Carey has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Composite Technology Corporation (CTC). John Mitola resigned for “personal reasons” and Dennis Carey will be replacing him. Carey has not been involved with CTC in the past so thus “meets the criteria to serve as an independent director.” The board is made up primarily of independent directors (three out of five) so Carey fits the bill perfectly.

In this article for the Harvard Business Review, authors H. David Sherman, Dennis Carey and Robert Brust discuss the idea of joining the audit committee for a company. In general, when business leaders are approached about board service, they are willing to join the board of directors but not the audit committee.
As they explain the problem, in part, “But the increasingly negative perception of audit committee work, propagated by front-page dissections of various accounting scandals, has made it difficult for businesses to attract the strongest candidates to serve in this corporate capacity. Research suggests that the percentage of new hires to U.S. corporate boards who are experienced CEOs has dropped from 53% in 2000 to under 20% today.”
